of garage sales and g-marts

this is the 'move-out' season..
for poor grads, it means keeping a hawk's eye on the G-mart (that's the garbage-bin, euphemistically put ;)) for random pieces of furniture, and pouncing on it before the next grad around the corner comes around on his prowl..
it's simply 'if u spot it and can carry it, it's yours!'

if you notice an apartment which seems to be overflowing with furniture, just take a look across the lane..there are 99% chances that a G-mart is right across..well, for the lesser-lucky mortals, there are these 'move-out-sale's..
where people sell off their last pieces of furniture for a few dollars before they say 'good-bye' to the town which has been home for a loong loong while, (more than they'd care to remember if they are phds ;) - well, the typical reaction of some i met was 'i'm done atlast! time to get out of this place!')
then you hear about people who make some quick bucks over g-mart stuff too - the real smart ones, who've actually landed $$$$$ salaried-jobs ;)
and some who manage to make a penny or two out of bread and butter they cant carry along..
ofcourse, there is also the crowd which remembers how some seniors handed down stuff to them when they came..and pass on the tradition..

my achievements at the g-mart stand at a much-needed vacuum cleaner and a chair, well those are the 'useful' stuff, probably the only stuff that'll get appreciation from a fellow roommate..if you ask me, i'm proud of the plank and bamboo-base which me and my roomie converted into a li'l table topped with a plant :)

i'm sure i would've got some white-elephants in this get-stuff-before-they-vanish-spree..
still, i know this is a fancy that wouldnt last long..you HAVE to stop if your roomies threaten to throw your stuff out if you bring in anymore..they aren't parents, afterall, who HAVE to put up with you, inspite of the junk you accumulate :)
today's bit on 'white elephant' sales:
i somehow got reminded of an archie's comic where he desperately tries to get rid of a wierd-looking vase, which uncannily reappeared everytime :)!

Sometimes I wonder when & why some changes that are inconceivable to most other people ever happen to grad students....and I will wonder this in you more than in me.

Imagine this in Chennai & I wuld love to see ur face. That dosent stop me from being happy for your 'climbing the ladder of life' with G-mart random pieces.

@anon
ha ha..i'd agree it's inconceivable in chennai - and i would've given you one shocked look just last year if you'd suggested it.
well, i guess g-mart is so glorified out here that you feel nothing but a sense of achievement when u manage to salvage something ;)
and why not wonder abt it more in that person who went out on a 'mission' seeking stuff not too long ago ;)?

I dont ever think I had the guts to accept that G-mart is my source of pride. Though I have never ever waited to pick something,it has always been pick when you need not when you get!.
